CALL TO ACTION

Your help is urgently needed to keep the Tahoe National Forest trails open.Write letters in support of the newly proposed Responsible Recreational Alternative, which has been crafted in response to the Tahoe National Forest’s travel management DEIS (Draft Environmental Impact Statement).

Comment period officially closes

December 26, 2008

The ‘preferred’ alternative closes over 2,400 miles of OHV trails and, typically, without analysis or reasonable justification. Almost all of these routes , although inventoried, were not ‘analyzed’ in the DEIS process.

The TNF staff has the unenviable task of creating a plan that specifies trails that can be used by you and me. They need the best possible input from the actual users and experts in the forest.

The seven alternatives proposed in the DEIS do not and will not meet the current and/or future needs of recreational users. As a result, a coalition of users has created a new alternative, the Responsible Recreation Alternative. This proposal intends to avert legal challenge and expensive litigation. Your written support is needed now!

Proposal Highlights

  • Adheres to Travel Management Rule, including a total ban on cross-county travel.
  • Requires all inventoried trails on the Tahoe National Forest to be designated within he National Forest Transportation System.
  • Includes all spurs of 100 feet or less providing for motorized access to dispersed recreation opportunities, camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, etc.
  • Leaves ‘seasonal closures’ minimally changed.
