WELCOME MESSAGE

The Tahoe National Forest has embarked on development of a Travel Management Plan that will change the character of the Forest. Approximately 2400 miles of historic routes, mining trails and old logging roads are being considered for closure.

Friends of Tahoe Forest Access is dedicated to being an active participant in the development of the Travel Management Plan now and in the future to ensure reasonable access to the Forest for recreational pursuits.

Tahoe National Forest has not inventoried routes less than 150 feet in length. As a result, access to many popular Dispersed Camping areas is at risk. The USFS has indicated that it would like to see vehicles limited to "one vehicle length" off route for parking. That would effectively turn many dispersed camping areas into walk-in camps, may make hiker's vehicles exposed to greater risk without proper trail-head parking.

Friends of Tahoe Forest Access has been meeting weekly with the USFS to secure access to the forest for trail review. We have secured restricted motorized access as Volunteers and since mid-August have been surveying and documenting historic routes, mining trails and old logging roads.
